Tom LaMure believes you should pay for what you use. When it comes to water use, a water meter is the best way to ensure everyone pays for his or her use and enforce conservation. For Mr. LaMure, conservation means saving money.

Mr. LaMure moved from a house that did not have a meter to a newer house with a meter. His bill decreased from the mandatory flat rate of $49.19 to an average of $34.38. His actual water cost is the total monthly bill less the customer charge of $10.02 or around $24.36. This customer charge is part of the $49.19 flat rate price. On an annual basis, Mr. LaMure paid about $412.56 in 2002. If he did not have a meter, his annual flat rate bill would have been $590.28. In other words, Mr. LaMure saved around $170 by being on a meter.
LaMure's inside water efficient practices include a low-impact showerhead and low flow toilets. Additionally, his water-efficient landscaping also helps to keep the water bill low. The newly xeriscaped yard includes a drip system, reverse osmosis, a kinetic water system, pathways with grass and only 100 sq ft of sod.
